Apple working on iPad?

Is Apple working on a new device called the "iPad?" If the rumors are true they are. We've heard rumors on various blogs of Apple coming out with a tablet device, but now a mainstream news organization is reporting on the iPad. FOXNews says Analysts expect Apple to release an iPad that would be like a big iPhone.

"Like an iPhone, it would have music, movies, e-mail, and Web browsing capabilities. It could also compete with the Amazon.com's Kindle as an e-reader, with Apple selling digital books, newspapers and magazines through its iTunes store."

Other web sites speculate that a tablet computer from Apple could sell for about $600.

Dell launching Android phone in China?

There are rumors around the Internet that Dell is launching a smartphone in China, and that the phone will run Android. There is no evidence of the launch but TechCrunch seems convinced and they've made several good calls in the past.

"There is also wide speculation on the operating system, but we’re guessing it’s Android. Dell has also been working with Google on an Android-powered tablet computer in recent months. But in April Reuters had a report that Dell may be creating a proprietary operating system with China-based software maker Red Office."

Dell's Android phone is rumored to be "iPhone-like" with no physical keyboard. Stay tuned.

Android killing Windows Mobile?

Microsoft used to dominate the mobile handset market but companies that used to be loyal to Microsoft are heading for Google's Android OS. Motorola is a good example of a company that has previously worked well with Microsoft. They are now turning their focus to Android.

"Like upstart HTC, a long-time Windows Mobile loyalist, Motorola is focusing its development resources behind Google’s Android OS. Both HTC and Motorola are developing their own user interfaces for Android, which indicates their seriousness about Google’s mobile platform. I wonder if this is going to be a trend that’s going to spread. From what I’ve heard, everyone from Lenovo and Huawei to Dell to Samsung are betting on Android. These companies would have been partners of Microsoft in the past."

Google CEO resigns from Apple Board of Directors

Google CEO Eric Schmidt is stepping down from Apple's board. As Google moves into business areas that overlap with Apple's, the potential for conflict of interest is increasing. It looks like both Schmidt and Apple realized the conflict and decided to part ways.

"Eric has been an excellent Board member for Apple, investing his valuable time, talent, passion and wisdom to help make Apple successful. Unfortunately, as Google enters more of Apple’s core businesses, with Android and now Chrome OS, Eric’s effectiveness as an Apple Board member will be significantly diminished, since he will have to recuse himself from even larger portions of our meetings due to potential conflicts of interest. Therefore, we have mutually decided that now is the right time for Eric to resign his position on Apple’s Board."

Sprint losing subscribers despite the Palm Pre

Sprint announced its second quarter results today and the nubmers don't look good. Despite having the exclusive on the Palm Pre, Sprint lost 257,000 subscribers and posted a net loss of $384 million.

The company tried to spin this as a good thing through their press release:

"In the second quarter, we made further progress on our efforts to enhance financial stability, improve the customer experience and reinvigorate the brand," said Dan Hesse, Sprint Nextel CEO. "The widespread visibility surrounding our record-breaking June launch of the Palm® Pre™ handset gave us an unprecedented opportunity to showcase these improvements to customers as ‘a new Sprint.’"

"In the quarter, we saw the best retail net add performance in the past seven quarters. We also saw the best quarterly sequential change in CDMA net add performance in two years, ARPU that has been stable for six consecutive quarters, continued prepaid growth, and improved sequential Adjusted Operating Income Before Depreciation and Amortization* (Adjusted OIBDA)," Hesse said. "However, we are not satisfied that we lost a quarter of a million customers in the quarter."

System glitch gives Best Buy customers Palm Pre for $99

If you were one of the customers who acted quickly you may have purchased a Palm Pre for $99 over the weekend at your local Best Buy store.

The Palm Pre was offered at Best Buy for $99 due to a system glitch. The Palm Pre is $199 but the system glitch gave customers an extra $100 off. Best Buy marketing manager John Bernier announced the error on his Twitter page on Sunday (see link below).

If you were lucky enough to walk out of Best Buy with a $99 Pre you'll get to keep that Pre. The rest of the world will have to cough up the full $199 for the Palm Pre.

Apple tablet coming in September?

If you believe the rumors Apple will launch a tablet device in September. The Financial Times is reporting the new tablet device will launch along with new iPod models.

"The talks come as Apple is separately racing to offer a portable, full-featured, tablet-sized computer in time for the Christmas shopping season, in what the entertainment industry hopes will be a new revolution. The device could be launched alongside the new content deals, including those aimed at stimulating sales of CD-length music, according to people briefed on the project.

Apple is working with EMI, SonyMusic, Warner Music and Universal Music Group, on a project the company has codenamed "Cocktail", according to four people familiar with the situation."

According to the report Apple's tablet will have a 10 inch screen and run the iPhone OS. It will also have a book reader/marketplace which will challenge Amazon's Kindle.

Google announces Chrome OS for Netbooks

Google has announced the Google Chrome OS that will run on netbooks. That's right, Google is getting in the OS business.

"Google Chrome OS is an open source, lightweight operating system that will initially be targeted at netbooks.

Later this year we will open-source its code, and netbooks running Google Chrome OS will be available for consumers in the second half of 2010. Because we're already talking to partners about the project, and we'll soon be working with the open source community, we wanted to share our vision now so everyone understands what we are trying to achieve."

Google has previously worked on Android, their OS for smartphones but this is another step on their way to compete directly with Microsoft.

Google says their OS will focus on speed, simplicity and security. They want the OS to boot quickly so users can be up and running on the web in a few seconds.

"The user interface is minimal to stay out of your way, and most of the user experience takes place on the web. And as we did for the Google Chrome browser, we are going back to the basics and completely redesigning the underlying security architecture of the OS so that users don't have to deal with viruses, malware and security updates. It should just work."

According to rumors floating around the web today, RIM is working on an enhanced Gmail plugin for the BlackBerry. Most BlackBerry and Gmail users are already frustrated because several Gmail features do not work on the BlackBerry. Read/unread status doesn't always work, and labels don't always show up. It looks like RIM is trying to address some of these issues with the plugin.

New features include:

- See your Gmail based emails in Conversation View for simple topic management
- Add and remove labels and stars to emails to keep inbox organized
- Archive and report as spam actions for mailbox management on the go
- Search your entire Gmail inbox

BlackBerry saves British skier's life

A British skier's life was literally saved by his BlackBerry. David Fitzherbert was skiing in the Matterhorn and Monterosa peaks in Switzerland when the snow beneath him gave way and fell 70 feet into a crevasse.

"The snow gave way beneath me and I fell down a very deep crevasse. After 70 feet it narrowed and I became stuck like a cork in a bottle between the walls. Fortunately the extra inches of the Blackberry were enough to block the fall."

Fitzherbert broke his jaw, some teeth, his nose and a bone in his chest but managed to stay alive thanks to the extra thickness of his BlackBerry. His BlackBerry survived the fall and is still working today.

Palm takes aim at iPhone in new ad

Palm is running a new print ad that takes aim at the Apple iPhone. The ad shows an open Palm Pre resting against an already eaten Apple.

The ad reads "Your iPhone contract is up. Perfect timing." The ad then goes on to talk about the lack of multitasking on the iPhone, and the supposed $1200 a user could save by switching to Sprint.

Ed Colligan leaves Palm - Jon Rubinstein named CEO

It's probably not too surprising that if Palm was looking for a new CEO they'd pick the guy who oversaw the Pre launch, Jon Rubinstein. Many didn't expect a change at the top so soon though.

Palm, Inc. announced that its board of directors has appointed Jon Rubinstein to lead the company as Chairman and CEO upon the departure of Ed Colligan, who is stepping down after sixteen years of leadership at the company.

Rubinstein, who joined Palm as Executive Chairman in October 2007 to help bring innovation back to the company, assumes his role as CEO on June 12. Colligan plans to take some time off, then join Elevation Partners.

"I am very excited about taking on this expanded role at Palm," said Rubinstein. "Ed and I have worked very hard together the past two years, and I'm grateful to him for everything he's done to help set the company up for success. With Palm webOS we have ten-plus years of innovation ahead of us, and the Palm Pre is already one of the year's hottest new products. Due in no small part to Ed's courageous leadership, we're in great shape to get Palm back to continuous growth, and we plan to keep the trajectory going upward."

Is this the Sony Ericsson Xperia X2?

An engadget tipster has sent in this shot of what the tipster says is the Xperia X2 codenamed "Vulcan." You can clearly make out an X Panel button in the lower left of the phone's front and a Windows key in the upper left of the keyboard. Does that mean this picture is legit? No, but it is a detail that would tend to lend some credibility to the photo.

Real or not, the X2's problem is the flop of the X1. After much hype Sony simply failed to deliver a great product. With the stiff competition out there, we don't expect this one to be a winner either.

Palm Pre likely to flop according to Business Week

William Hurley has just published a grim view of Palm's upcoming Pre. He lays out quite a few reasons why the Pre will be a disappointment. He starts with the stiff competition posed by Apple, RIM, Nokia etc. Can Palm really take on these big boys who have such a big lead in smartphone adoption? Then there's pricing, and their partner carrier Sprint who has lost millions of users in recent months due to customer service and network issues.

Another big problem that Hurley cites is the lack of software for the WebOS platform.

"Remember that Palm's developer network has been largely dormant for three to four years; not immediately embracing its reinvigorated efforts is shortsighted and will prove costly."

Only time will tell if Palm can pull this off. In our view, the Pre is simply too small and users will want a much larger display, but if the WebOS proves popular other devices will come along that support it.

Keep in mind that Hurley's grim viewpoint should be taken with a grain of salt. According to Tech Trader Daily, he's an open source guru who apparently got into a spat with Palm over the company's willingness to be involved with an event that Hurley was involved in.

Palm Pre officially launching on June 6

AT&T mullls cheaper iPhone plans

According to BusinessWeek, AT&T is considering cheaper iPhone plans. Slashing data prices could attract new subscribers to AT&T. Many users like having a full browser in the palm of their hands, but they don't like the price of AT&T's unlimited plan. If AT&T offers a cheaper plan they maybe able to attract new customers who only need the occasional web access.

AT&T and Apple are currently working out their contract which probably accounts for the pricing consideration by AT&T. Apple likely wants pricing flexibility and AT&T is interested in continuing as the exclusive iPhone carrier.

There is also word that a less expensive iPhone could be on the way. If that's true, a cheaper iPhone with a cheaper plan could boost AT&T's standing as it competes with other US carriers.

No official word on pricing is known at this time.

Pre demo units showing up in stores

Various web sites are reporting that Palm Pre demo or "advocate" units are showing up in retail stores. These units are for Sprint employees to study and test before the Pre goes on sale.

Some Sprint employees have been leaking details on the Pre. According to Pre Central:

First off, the phone is as small as we've reported, it "feels like pure sex in the hand." Ahem. We have corroboration that the keyboard does in fact feel on the small side: "definitely a cross between a Centro and a Treo Pro keyboard." The webOS is "amazing" and "responsive."

Stitcher audio streaming app available in App World

Stitcher announced the release of its on-demand audio application into BlackBerry’s App World. The new app is available free of charge for Curve 8300, 8310, 8320 and Bold 9000 from Research in Motion (RIM).

Palm Pre shows up on Best Buy web site

The Palm Pre launch is just around the corner and if you don't believe it, just take it from Best Buy. The Palm Pre has landed on the Best Buy web site and although no launch date is given, the fact that the Pre is listed is significant.

The rumor is that the Pre launch date will be announced on May 19. The launch date is expected to be June 7. The Pre is rumored to sell for $199 with a 2-year contract.

Next generation iPhone specs leaked

A user at the Chinese forum Weiphone has posted specs and a screenshot from what is claimed to be the next generation iPhone. The screenshot seems to depict an iPhone model number "MB717LL" with 32GB of Storage.

Other details from the poster include:

- 600MHz CPU Speed (up from 400MHz)
- 256MB RAM (up from 128MB)
- Digital Compass and FM
- 3.2 megapixel camera with auto focus
- 32GB size
- No major changes in battery, screen and external casing.

MacRumors has been following the forum and notes that the poster has no track record of accurate information but notes, "Chinese web/forums have been a common source of early photos of recent Apple releases including the unibody MacBook and MacBook Pro casings."

If one were to guess at specs for a new iPhone these specs would not be unrealistic. Most people were already expecting a 32GB iPhone.

Evernote for BlackBerry Released

Evernote for BlackBerry has been released. The popular program has already been available for Windows Mobile and the iPhone, and now BlackBerry users can give it a whirl.

From the Evernote Blog:

"Evernote for BlackBerry lets you create notes containing text, snapshots, voice recordings, and file attachments. Once created, the new content is automatically sent to the Evernote Service, making it available across all the versions of Evernote that you use. You can also access your existing notes, search by keywords, filter by tags and notebooks, or simply browse.

It is important to note that features are linked to the capabilities of your device. For example, if your BlackBerry does not have a camera, then you will not see the Snapshot note option. Also, the note searching and display experience depends on the capabilities of your BlackBerry’s built-in web browser. In general, the newer your BlackBerry, the better Evernote will run on it.

Sony Ericsson's failed Xperia X1 an experiment says CEO

According to a piece in the Financial Times, Hideki (Dick) Komiyama, president of Sony Ericsson says the Xperia X1 Windows Mobile Phone was "kind of an experiment."

The Xperia X1 failed to take off even though it's an impressive phone. The company is now hoping to release two new smartphones by the end of this year, and a third early in 2010. These smartphones will not all run Windows Mobile though. One will run Windows mobile, one will run Google's Android, and the other will run Nokia's Symbian OS.

WMExperts has an interesting view on what went wrong with the X1:

"As anyone who's used one knows, it's not that the Xperia X1 is a bad phone. It's just that it priced itself out of the game without bringing anything really groundbreaking. The panels interface is interesting, but it's just not enough to justify spending that much jing, especially today. Let's hope SE finds more of a middle ground (and U.S. carrier support) with its next try."

TweetGenius has been released by BGR and is getting rave reviews. The Boy Genius Report is responsible for developing TweetGenius. Apparently BGR is very into Twitter and the BlackBerry and they could not find a Twitter client they were happy with.

"TweetGenius was created out of necessity. Simply put, no BlackBerry Twitter application was capable of quenching our thirst. We decided to make TweetGenius for the BlackBerry community because we're BlackBerry-lovers who know what other BlackBerry-lovers want in an app."

BlackBerry to get Google Apps Support

Google has announced the upcoming availability of the Google Apps Connector for BlackBerry Enterprise Server, which allows for proper access to Gmail, Calendar, and Contacts through the default, built-in BlackBerry applications. Google and RIM are currently testing integration between Google Apps and BlackBerry Enterprise Server that will allow administrators to manage users and policies similar to how they work with Microsoft Exchange.

Google Apps Connector for BES offers:

# Gmail with push support, offline access, read/delete sync, spam filtering, and support for archiving/stars right.

# One-way sync (GCal > BlackBerry) with Google Calendar, with support for recurring meetings and meeting notification alerts.

Xobni coming to BlackBerry

Now the company is apparently ready to make a version for BlackBerry. This pic has leaked and xobni users are excited.

"Xobni, which is a plug-in for Outlook that incorporates data from various social networks, currently does not have a mobile client. But the company has hired a small team of engineers to work on mobile apps, with Blackberry being the first device to get one."

According to TechCrunch the app could be released this summer.

Palm Eos is the mini Pre

We reported yesterday that Palm was developing another WebOS phone that would be smaller than the Pre. Less than 24 hours later the news is making its way around the Internet. Engadget is reporting that the new Palm phone will be the Eos, a super-thin 3G phone.

The rumor is the phone will be a follow up to the Centro and will be a quadband GSM/HSDPA phone on 850/1900 frequencies which AT&T and Rogers use. The phone will supposedly be 10.6mm thin with a 2.63-inch, 320 x 400 display.

Obama to get encrypted BlackBerry soon

Remember when the Secret Service supposedly told President-elect Obama that he could not use a BlackBerry? Obama won that battle and has been using a BlackBerry for personal use. Apparently the NSA has been working on a souped-up BlackBerry that President Obama will be able to use for official business, including accessing Top Secret data.

The Washington Times reports Obama will receive a BlackBerry 8830 in a few months that he'll be able to use at the White House and during Presidential travel.

"The top-secret BlackBerry 8830 is in the final stages of development by the National Security Agency, which will soon begin checking to make sure its encryption software meets federal standards. The device could be ready for use in the next few months. "

The President's BlackBerry will feature a software called SecureVoice, by the Genesis Key Inc. (Why in the world would they tell everyone what software is on the BlackBerry?) The software is so strong it can apparently turn any BlackBerry 8830 or Curve into a device that can beat hackers, eavesdroppers and spies.

If Philip Markoff, the man arrested in Boston as the Craigslist killer, turns out to be the Craigslist killer, he might blame his BlackBerry for his arrest. Apparently cops tracked him down based on his BlackBerry activities.

In the various pictures released to the media you can clearly see the suspect handling a phone that is apparently a BlackBerry.

"The Boston Herald reports: His online trail did him in, police say. Investigators said they chased down "high-tech leads" and traced "IP addresses to physical locations" to snare Markoff in his own matrix."

Lock your BlackBerry with PatternLock

PatternLock offers a new and fun way for you to lock your BlackBerry Storm. The lock screen shows 9 dots in a 3x3 grid. Before using PatternLock, you define what your lock pattern will be. The next time you see the lock screen, you trace your finger in the pattern you defined before and your device will unlock. Any other pattern and in any other order will not unlock the device. The application allows you to either use the default wallpaper or to pick a different background image stored on your device. You can even set it to autolock the device whenever you turn it on. You can also set it to autolock when the device is inactive for a time period of your choosing.

PatternLock also features a call screen lock to help avoid accidental screen clicks with your face during a call. This can be activated after a set time delay and can even display a custom message when locked.

Please note that this will not replace the BlackBerry lock functionality when pressing the lock button. It is recommended you assign this application to a convenience key for easy access, or you can rely on the autolocking system. RIM CEO hints at more touchscreen devices

Laptop Magazine sat down with RIM co-CEO Mike Lazaridis and the discussion was revealing. He hints at more touchscreen devices and admits RIM had some growing pains with the BlackBerry Storm.

Highlights:

- " Despite claims that the Storm was rushed to market, Lazaridis says the Storm was thoroughly tested. At the same time, he stressed that this was RIM’s first touch product. (There have been reports that a Storm sequel will feature a new touchscreen interface and Wi-Fi, but Lazaridis wouldn’t comment on future devices.)
- BlackBerry’s push technology is far superior to its competitors (ahem, iPhone), and its software is tailor-made for true multitasking without sacrificing battery life.

Palm Pre success questioned by Motley Fool

Despite all the buzz surrounding the Palm Pre smartphone, some people aren't convinced. The Motley Fool has published an article entitled, "Palm's Pre: Dead on Arrival?" The first sentence of the article reads, "Palm's Pre smartphone, feature-rich though it may "be, appears doomed. How's that for pessimism?

The article's author, Tim Beyers, cites a recent survey of 4,292 adult smartphone buyers by ChangeWave Research. The survey found that only 4% of respondents planned to buy the Pre in the next six months. Can you really rely on a survey that is taken before the phone is even out?

Granted, it will be an uphill battle for Palm as the iPhone and BlackBerry have a huge lead. We're taking a wait and see approach. The Pre looks quite promising and will at least keep Palm in the game for awhile. Can they overtake the iPhone and BlackBerry? That's doubtful, but they may be able to carve out a nice piece of the overall pie.

Android set top box coming

It looks like Google's Android operating system isn't just for phones. According to the web site Android Guys, Motorola is building a TV set top box for Japanese telephone provider KDDI. The new device will supposedly be ready by October's CEATEC show in Japan.

"The set top box called "au Box" will allow users to take their music and video content with them on the go. The box lets users play or rip a CD and either store the music or transfer it to a mobile handset or portable media player via a USB cable, Android Guys reported. The music files can then be played by the device through the integrated stereo speakers."

BlackBerry Suffers Outage AGAIN

This is the one deal breaker for BlackBerry users as far as we're concerned. Relying on all your emails going through RIM's servers means that when they go down, you're down. What a hassle.

There are reports of a nationwide BlackBerry outage affecting BIS. AT&T and Verizon users are most affected by the outage. Some users are reporting that they're back up and going at the time of this writing, but some are still down. C'mon RIM.

Palm Touchstone product line coming?

Can you believe we haven't see this before? It took until the late 1990's to see self-adhesive postage stamps so I guess we can't expect much in the US. If you're constantly fumbling with cables and cords the Recoil iPod car charger with retractable cable s for you.

The Recoil uses a magnetic docking mechanism to pull the cable back in place while not in use. It would be great if they could add an FM transmitter to this gadget, but we're happy to keep the cable in place for now. At $30 this thing is pricey, but might be worth it for you neat freaks.

BlackBerry Storm 2 confirmed

Just yesterday we wrote about a rumor that the BlackBerry Storm 2 with WiFi and a better touchscreen was headed for Verizon. Now comes word that a RIM employee has confirmed the device.

According to the Dutch site Tweakers a RIM channel sales manager named Alain Segond von Banchet says that the BlackBerry Storm 2 is scheduled to launch at the end of the year or at the beginning of next year. He also confirmed that the Storm 2 will contain an improved touch input method.

BlackBerry Storm 2 with WiFi coming to Verizon?

File this one under the rumor category for now, but SlashGear reports they have a source that says Verizon will release the BlackBerry Storm 2 in September of this year. The best part of the new Storm 2 is the addition of WiFi. That would be fantastic.

"While we’re not able to name our source, we can say that we’ve no doubts regarding the veracity of their information. The source gave us their assurances that the Storm 2 would have WiFi, and would be an even better Pro-consumer device than the first Storm.

If you're looking for an email-only device the Peek Pronto might be for you. It's a bare bones email device that is simple, but limited. Gizmodo has taken it for a spin and posted a review. It's worth the read.

Gizmodo calls the Peek Pronto,

"...boxy, whimsical minimalism done right. Its unfussy shape and the front's bubbly keys are friendly and inviting. But its chrome back, and its slimness—thinner than the BlackBerry Curve 8900, the thinnest BlackBerry you can buy—infuse it with the sufficient gadget allure."

The Peek Pronto is $80 for the hardware plus $20 a month for the service on T-Mobile. That's quite a bit for email-only but might fit some needs. It's not the best device, but if you don't want to be on a contract you might consider it.

HTC Snap looks a lot like a BlackBerry

The HTC Snap Windows Mobile phone looks like a BlackBerry. It even has a "jog ball." It's plain looking but packs a punch. The Snap sports a 2.4-inch screen, 528 MHz Qualcomm processor, 192 MB RAM, MicroSD slot and 256 MB internal memory, 3G HSPA, Bluetooth 2.0, 802.11g wi-fi, 2 megapixel camera, GPS and a QWERTY keyboard. It has a 1500 mAh battery with 8.5 hours of talk time, and an estimated 15 days of standby.

The Snap will offer HTC's "Inner Circle" feature, which can pull emails from selected contacts to the top of your inbox.

The HTC Snap will be available in the 2nd quarter of this year but no pricing is available at this time.

BlackBerry gets full-length TV shows

It appears the rumors were true. BlackBerry Bold and Curve 8900 users will be able to get full-length TV shows via QuickPlay Media's PrimeTime2Go. Available in the App World, PrimTime2Go will offer video over WiFi. This is somewhat limiting because you'll need WiFi coverage to watch your shows. Other carriers like Sprint and AT&T have video options that work over their cellular network.

QuickPlay will charge a monthly subscription fee of $7.99 for its PrimeTime2Go service. The service will be available on the BlackBerry Bold and the BlackBerry Curve 8900 models.

UPDATE: It turns out you do not need to be connected to WiFi to watch your shows, but only to download the show. Once the show is downloaded you can watch it at any time.

According to Android Community, Google has been pulling tethering apps from the Android Market. According to at least one developer who talked to Android Community, Google is citing their distribution agreements with carriers as the reason for removal:

"Google enters into distribution agreements with device manufacturers and Authorized Carriers to place the Market software client application for the Market on Devices. These distribution agreements may require the involuntary removal of Products in violation of the Device manufacturer’s or Authorized Carrier’s terms of service." - Google Developer Distribution Agreement

MySpace app coming to Windows Mobile this summer

MySpace announced today support for Microsoft Windows Mobile and Microsoft Silverlight. MySpace will launch a new mobile application for Windows Mobile this summer. MySpace will also integrate Silverlight into the MySpace Open Platform.

"Our relationship enables app developers to use Silverlight to create engaging MySpace apps and allows Windows Mobile users to have a more personal MySpace experience on their phone," Aber Whitcomb, chief technology officer of MySpace, said in a statement.

The MySpace application will be available on Windows Mobile 6.1 phones in the summer and via Windows Mobile Marketplace for Mobile and on the Web in the fall.

BlackBerry OS 4.7.0.113 coming to Verizon's Storm

The next official OS version of Verizon's BlackBerry Storm will be 4.7.0.113. According to engadget, Verizon will make OS version 4.7.0.113 the official version for its BlackBerry Storm.

The last official update for Verizon's Storm was four months ago, meanwhile we've seen a flurry of leaked OS builds since then.

Skype coming to iPhone and BlackBerry

Skype will launch a version of its software for the iPhone on Tuesday, and a BlackBerry version in May. iPhone users will be able to download Skype from the App Store for free. Interestingly, Skype for the iPhone's VoIP service will not work over a cellular connection but requires WiFi to work. The iPhone version of Skype will support chatting over a cellular connection.

Video calling is not yet suppored but is being considered for future versions, according to BGR. There are several unique features to Skype for iPhone including the ability to use the camera hardware to capture a photo.

No information is available for the BlackBerry version other than the release date in May. Stay tuned.

Beta tester says Palm Pre coming April 30

Don't get your hopes up, but Jim Van, a Palm Pre beta tester, has Twittered that the Pre will be released on April 30th. That would be welcome news to a lot of us who are waiting to get our hands on one of these, but is Jim Van even a beta tester? We have no evidence of that. As Gizmodo points out, Palm would certainly require a NDA before giving any information out and he could certainly be held accountable if he twittered some inside information.

That said, Palm needs to get the Pre released soon before they lose steam. They've been doing a great job of building the suspense but eventually that will get old. Let's hope this guy is right and the Pre release is just around the corner. I'd hate to have to wait until July to pick up a Pre.

Apple to raise prices at iTunes as much as $1.29 per track

According to recent reports Apple is about to raise the price for premium songs at iTunes starting April 7. Until now, Apple has charged a simple $.99 per tune but they are about to break the $1 barrier and test the waters at $1.29. The LA Times reported it like this:

"The world's largest music store, Apple's iTunes, plans to boost the price of many hit singles and selected classic tracks to $1.29 on April 7, breaking the psychological barrier of 99 cents in what could be the first big test of how much consumers are willing to pay to download individual songs."

Apple has not officially announced the change but they've been notifying record companies of the upcoming change.

Strange Windows Mobile contact photos problem

We've got a strange problem with Windows Mobile 6.1. All of a sudden our contact photos do not show up in the phone app on a Treo 800w. All contact photos are present in the contacts, mail app, and in Outlook but they simply will not show up in the phone app.

We've tried a few things. First we did a resync and that did nothing. Then we restored a backup and that did nothing. We also tried renaming the pim file in /My Device which essentially wiped our contacts off the phone. After another sync, nothing. So we finally did a hard reset and started from scratch which obviously solved the problem.

TealOS shut down by Palm, Inc.

In a move that is sure to irritate Palm fans, Palm Inc. has apparently shut down the webOS look-a-like, TealOS. A TealPoint representative posted a message in the Talktalk support forums:

"I'm sorry to say that at Palm's request, as of this upcoming Monday, March 30, we will no longer be selling or distributing TealOS.

We really appreciate the help and unprecedented enthusiasm so many of you have shown for this product. It's been a long time since we experienced this kind of customer cooperation, and the program's success came at a badly needed time. We wish we could continue contributing to this great community."

iPhone finally available without a contract

The rumor has become reality. You can now pickup an iPhone without signing a contract. Be prepared to pay a ridiculous price though. The 8GB iPhone sells for $599 without a contract, and the 16GB iPhone sells for $699.

The contract-free iPhones are available now from AT&T and Apple stores. To get the deal at AT&T, you must be an existing AT&T customer and you can only purchase 1 iPhone at the contract-free price. Apple will sell them to whoever walks in. Sounds like the Apple store is the better deal.

SlingPlayer Mobile 1.0 for BlackBerry and iPhone

You guessed it. SlingPlayer Mobile for BlackBerry is finally out of beta and version 1.0 is ready for download. It was available in December but it's nice to get to a full stable version.

On the iPhone front, SlingPlayer Mobile for iPhone has been out for awhile but it has been submitted to the App Store and is awaiting approval

Will Dell buy Palm?

On the heels of a rumored Dell smartphone flop, ComputerWorld is putting forth speculation that Dell may actually buy Palm. They have no real inside information, but they say that according to three analysts "an acquisition would make sense for both companies." Would it?

The most obvious reason for Dell to purchase Palm is so they could make a jump into the smartphone market.

Financial strategy consultant Sramana Mitra also recently made the case that Palm needs to take on Apple Inc. "Palm cannot take on Apple on its own, and a Palm-Dell union would change the equation dramatically," she wrote on the financial news site Seeking Alpha.

TV service coming to BlackBerry?

According to CrackBerry, NewTeeVee.com claims to have heard from several sources that RIM will soon be unveiling a full-episode television service for BlackBerry. The rumor suggests the service could be unveiled as early as next week at CTIA. This would be unusual since RIM is expected to launch their App World store at the conference, but one can hope.

Rumored details about the BlackBerry TV service:

It will be an unlimited monthly subscription service for a fee

Once a user orders a program, the content will be downloaded in the background over Wi-Fi

Multiple broadcast and cable networks have licensed content for the service

BlackBerry App World launching April 1

RIM is expected to launch the BlackBerry App World on April 1. According to Business Week, RIM CEO will take the stage at the wireless industry's annual trade show in Las Vegas and announce the launch of the BlackBerry App World.

Since Apple launched their App Store other companies like RIM are feeling left out. After RIM launches their App World, Palm, Microsoft, and Nokia are expected to follow. Apple's App Store has proven to be successful in supporting the demand for the iPhone.

Will RIM's App World be successful? Probably.

Google Mobile App for Blackberry with Search by voice and My Location

Google Mobile App on your Blackberry will now let you search with your voice and with My Location. You can give it a try by going to m.google.com on your BlackBerry's browser.

Unfortunately, the BlackBerry Storm is not yet supported at this time.

"Suppose you're vacationing in London, and you have a craving for fish and chips. With the My Location feature enabled, you can just enter "fish n chips" into Google Mobile App, and it will return the fish and chips restaurants closest to you. No need to type in "fish and chips near SW1W". And since Google Mobile App displays search suggestions as you type, you may only need to type part of the query before "Best Fish n Chips in London" pops up as a suggestion. We're a fan of anything that saves keystrokes on the way to deep-fried British goodness."

Apple sued over eBook reader software

According to reports, Apple, Inc. has been sued over its e-book reader software available in the app store. Apple Insider reports that Swiss communications firm, Monec Holding, has filed suit in a Virginia district court accusing Apple of "patent infringement, unfair trade practices, monopolization, and tortious interference for allegedly treading on its January 2002 patent No. 6,335,678 titled 'Electronic device, preferably an electronic book.'"

Although the suit does not identify a specific eBook application, it is interesting that Apple recently starting distributing Amazon's Kindle eBook reader software. Another eBook application called Classics has also been available since last year.

Nokia E71s launch for AT&T pushed back

Rumor has it that a last-minute bug discovered in the Nokia E71x's firmware will push back its launch on AT&T. The E71x has been a hotly-anticipated device and this news will no doubt cause many people some angst.

According to engadget there might be a silver lining in this whole ordeal.

"The good news is that the delay might be accompanied by a price break, apparently, bringing the device down to $149.99 on contract after rebate at launch. This whole sitch is still in the rumor phase, but look, AT&T, we're going to hold you to it anyway -- The People want this for under two bills."
